Question by bored: How do you differentiate joking and having a sense of humor versus being an asshole?

My boyfriend is constantly saying rude things, but then he'll say that he's just joking. I sometimes take to heart the way people joke with me. How do you differentiate having a sense of humor versus just being plain rude and inconsiderate?

People some times say things to see what shocks you, and if you take offence - they then say they were only jocking.
