Which is the proper term for a detective who doesn't have a soulmate... sleuth or gumshoe??

I'm not sure whether your options fit a detective sans soul mate. Surely a detective that did have a soul mate could equally be described by both?

Gumshoe would imply a sneaky, light-footed PI (as in sneakers).
Whereas a Sleuth is anyone who investigates in the style of a detective.
